ABOUT US

"And he said to them, come away by yourselves to a quiet place, and take a rest for a time. Because there were a great number coming and going, and they had no time even for food." (Mark 6:31)

Hearty Welcome to

St. Scholastica's Retreat House, Baguio City!

Located at 108 Wagner Road, Military Cut-off, Baguio City...
… is a place for private meditation and prayer…
… of spiritual conversation to "listen with the ear of the heart"
(according to St. Benedict in his Rule)

… where…
… those who Seek God and the meaning of life
can find Him in silence and solitude …
… those who are tired and confused can be free from noise and hurry,
and take some rest and refreshment for the weary soul…
… and after a wearisome journey, hard labors, and fatigue from working in different occupations and professions,
… the weary can find rest, and experience the great compassion,
tenderness and care of Jesus Christ, for His disciples and for all
those who seek Him with all their heart…

… it is our mountain home and truly a Home away from home…

Browsing through and gleaning from the annals of our history, we realized that as the Sisters of our Manila Priory grew in number, the convent in Baguio became not just a home for our elderly Sisters and a favoured vacation place during the summer months but also the venue for retreats and conferences. Because of this, Sister Assumpta Filser,OSB, the Prioress in the 1960's initiated the construction of a building with enough rooms to accommodate the Sisters for various purposes. Unfortunately, the strong earthquake of 1990 destroyed this building. The present structure of St. Scholastica's Convent that was built after the earthquake provided our aging and sick Sisters that time with better facilities befitting their health condition.

With the advent of social media, young and old alike desire to connect with as many "friends" as possible. Too often than not, these connections are empty and hollow; competing for attention, joining the "rat race" to material success; not realizing the authentic connection that is God in and through the community. With all this, the world has become a place of noise and clutter. People find it difficult to be contented, to be still, to be quiet and listen to the voice of God. With modern technology, people thought and would like to believe that life would be made easier and faster and less burdensome. But technology has never been and will never be the answer to people's woes; the needs of the century had become so complicated ... the intermingling of different cultures, the signs of the times, people with their various needs and concerns continue to search and thirst for meaning and purpose of life ... for answers to deeper questions ...

Since its foundation in 1917 here in Baguio City (102 years and counting), St. Scholastica's Convent and Retreat House has been strengthened by the same Benedictine spirituality that has invigorated our German, Filipina and all Missionary Benedictine Sisters who came before us. The energy that springs from their heart and soul, has remained with us all throughout these years. This momentum, springing from the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ, has been the driving force that has brought St. Scholastica's Retreat House — Baguio City in its ultimate place today - that of a center of spirituality, transitioning into a full blown Retreat House offering Benedictine hospitality to those who seek God, and the truths about life, about love and the mysteries of God and His creation.

Together with you, we, Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing, stand on holy ground where our German and Filipina Sisters used to have their moments of quiet, rest and relaxation for so many years. With you in our midst, we feel that they have lovingly left their prayers here. So we offer you our "ORA ET LABORA" as we strike that balance in our PRAYER AND WORK. And finally, as we try to "connect" and build a faith community, we offer the Gift of Silence and Solitude as our Gift to the world... Once again, we invite you all to a spiritual journey here at
St. Scholastica's Retreat House - Baguio City.
